The Canadian Adult Literacy Program (CALP) is a government sponsored program.
CALP exists to provide assistance to adults wanting to achieve life goals. This is accomplished through a variety of ways as everyone has different goals. CALP can provide learning opportunities to:
- Gain confidence in public speaking
- Navigate online safely
- Prepare for English competency testing
- Acquire job skills to enhance employment opportunities
This is accomplished through trained volunteers for one-on-one tutoring, scheduled group training sessions and access to resource materials through the VPL. CALP is adaptable to your learning needs and goals. You are always welcome to come have a chat with us to see how we can assist you.

English Conversation Group
Each Thursday evening from September to June newcomers gather in the Vanderhoof Public Library Multi-Purpose room. This group is to practice speaking in English and learn about Canadian culture in a fun and welcoming environment. The group includes newcomers from all over the world at different levels of confidence in English. The topics are diverse and often involve food or activities. We meet local people and learn about our community. The program is free as are all things offered through CALP. One-on-One Tutoring
Some learners prefer to work with a tutor either online or in person. Volunteers from the community assist learners to achieve their goals in improving their English skills. After registering and the initial assessment, with Vanderhoof Public Library CALP individuals that wish to have a tutor are introduced to a volunteer tutor, who has undergone some training. Schedules and study materials are worked out between the tutor and learner. Often tutors are used to assist individuals prepare for English Competency testing such as CELPIP. Learning Upgrade App
The Vanderhoof Public Library, CALP offers students of English access to a free app called Learning Upgrade. Once registered with this free app for your phone you are assigned lessons at your assessed level. Although it is based out of the United States the lessons are helpful to learn grammar at all levels with audio and written practice. CELPIP Preparation Resources
The Vanderhoof Public Library is pleased to offer resources to help you prepare for the CELPIP exam. Resources available include workbooks, study guides and online practice exams for all components of the exam. Your library membership gives you access to these resources. A quiet space is available to work through the CELPIP 10 practice exams available by booking a time slot with library staff or contacting us through calp@vanderhooflibrary.com.
Online Ellii Self-Directed Courses
The Vanderhoof Public Library CALP offers online courses to improve your English proficiency. These courses are available through a program called Ellii. After registering with the program, learners will have access to lessons to work through at their own pace. Ellii offers opportunity to listen, speak, read and write in English. The course begins with an assessment to determine the CLB level to begin with. Most of the exercises are corrected through the program but some will be marked by the CALP staff as they are completed. Ellii offers lessons from pre-beginner CLB to CLB 12. Certificates of completion are available to learners however these are not recognized by Immigration Canada.
